Fire Safety

First of all I would like to ensure you that wood burning stoves are perfectly safe but there are also some safety tips that are handy to know.

Chimney Fire
Chimney fires occur mostly when there is a build up of sooting/taring in the Chimney.
If left this will eventually set on fire and cause a chimney fire.
Chimney fires are very dangerous as the temperatures are so high and a number of things could happen.
1. You could damage your chimney/chimney liner.
2. The heat from the Chimney could get so hot that combustible materials near the chimney may set alight.
3. Floor joists and roof joist may set on fire.
Basically you are at risk of your house burning down.

How do you know you are having a chimney fire?
You will know if you are having a chimney fire.
People report very loud popping sounds or a very loud roaring and rumbling noise. (sounding like a train is coming through your room.)
You could have fire coming out the top of your Chimney.

What to do if you are having a chimney fire?
1.Call the emergency services.
2.Close flue and air vents on the stove to try and reduce the heat of the fire.
3.If suitable and your house is not burning down you could throw sand/ash/wet canvas sack onto the fire to put out the fire. (Putting water into the stove could damage it but it is better than you house burning down)
Some people suggest putting in lots of water and keeping the flue open. The steam created can put out the chimney fire.(This can cause damage to the chimney and to the stove)
4.If required use your fire extinguisher.
5. Most importantly get out the house and wait for the emergence services to come. Your life is more important than your belongings.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning is a very serious issue. It is a silent gas that causes flue like symptoms, headaches, nausea, sleepiness and confusion at very low concentrations and as the concentration increases it can cause unconsciousness and even death.
