Chimney Sweeps

First of all I would like to explain the importance of chimney sweeping.

Chimneys need to allow free passage of dangerous combustion gasses.
Regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, helping prevent dangerous chimney fires. Cleaning will increase the efficiency of some appliances. Bird nests, cobwebs and other blockages need to be removed.

The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance. Frequency will depend on a number of factors including: Type of fuel, appliance used, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney. Your sweep will be able to advise on sweeping frequency during the appointment, the sweeping frequencies below are for guidance.

Smokeless fuel:At least once a year
Wood:Quarterly when in use
Bituminous coal:Quarterly when in use
Oil:Once a year
Gas:Once a year

However most Chimney sweepers that I have talked to say once a year is enough.

Most websites do not explain this but a lot of home insurances will not pay out if there is a chimney fire and you have not had your chimney swept.

Always get your chimney swept by a registered sweep this way you will get a certificate showing that the chimney has been swept. This should be stored in a fireproof safe/filing cabinate or in a different building if possible.
In the UK there is the National Association of Chimney Sweeps.

Here is a list of Chimney sweeps.
